Language Learning Humor from the Tiny Tots

One of the ways I serve in my local church is in teaching the 2’s and 3’s class. My husband and I have taught this class for much of the past 20 years or so. As some of you know, this is a very challenging age group to teach. At our church, this is the first Sunday School class that the children actually are taught a short lesson.

This past Sunday, our lesson was about God sending the promised Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Most 2’s and 3’s are just figuring out their own language, and the idea of different languages seemed, umm, foreign to them. But, I happened to have my daughter helping me, and she happens to be fluent in Spanish. So, I asked her to say “Jesus loves me” in Spanish for the class.

She replied, “Jesús me ama.” And she repeated this several times.

Most of the children looked like she must be a one-year-old, and talking baby-talk. But, one little boy, I’ll call him “George” said “I want to say it!”

These moments when a child is tracking with your teaching are very rare for this age group. Needless to say, I was very happy and proud of how this lesson was progressing.

So, I said, “Go ahead, George, say Jesus loves me in Spanish!”

George excitedly exclaimed, “Jesus is a Mama!”

I can only imagine the car ride home, when the parents ask, “So, George, what did you learn in your Sunday School class today?”
